Nov 16, 2013 Step by step guide on how to map your Synology NAS to your windows explorer. 1.Download and install NetDrive, it works with windows 7 and windows 8. This software is free for home use. Set up network drive by clicking ” New Site” and give your site a name, for example “Trantor”. This will now run your script once. You won't see anything happening on your screen, but since you've asked to receive an email, your Synology should normally send you an email with the entire run details. If you haven't set up email notifications, read here. Based on the results of your run, you'll know if you've done everything correctly. Synology has a nice workflow in their DSM platform that makes setting up shares very easy. As a quick background, we are using the Synology DS1812+which has been unboxed with its hardware exposed. This particular guide is applicable to other Synology NAS units. From the Synology Control Panel, there is a Win/Mac/NF section. Mar 21, 2013 Hi, Currently daisy chain various external disc drives to my Mac, including a non-networked Drobo, and am thinking about installing a NAS This would need to harmoniously serve my iMac, Windows 8 laptop, Apple TVs, Oppo 95 etc and enable the Mac.

Are you not able to configure the Synology to use LDAPS aka LDAP over SSL? You would need to use SSL certificates at both ends. If you using self-signed certs you need to make sure that all devices trust them including the Synology, this might involve also installing your own rootCA public cert as well and marking it trusted.
Another approach would be to setup a SSH tunnel between the Synology and the Mac Open Directory server, and to use SSH keys not passwords. There is a Linux tool called autossh for automatically starting a SSH tunnel. You have the Synology access a different port number for LDAP locally e.g. 127.0.0.1:3890 and autossh listens for traffic on the defined port, redirects it via the SSH tunnel and it emerges at the other end on the proper - in this case port 389.

Note: LDAPS uses port 636.
Using autossh would of course require accessing the Linux environment of the Synology to install it and make the required changes.

I have done the above for accessing MySQL on a real Linux system. MySQL in theory can run over SSL but it has various problems with this so instead I use an SSH tunnel between the MySQL client and the MySQL server. (MySQL has or has had problems with OpenSSL created certs, see https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=64870 plus various other hassles.)
